Desolation was the seventh living child of an elven lady of the evening. When she asked her mother about her father, her mother merely shrugged. Her greenish skin, lavender hair and purple eyes set her apart from others. At first she was beaten, spit upon and bullied. Then she became very good at hiding. VERY good.
It was this skill that let her survive the massacre when the soldiers came through their village. She never did find out who they were or why they attacked. She was out in the woods looking for food when it started. The damp fog and chill wind had her feeling miserable and she had holed up for a bit in the shelter of a rock when she heard the first screams and saw the smoke rise from the direction of her village.
Her mother had taught her what little magic she knew and Desolation used almost all of the concealment spells to keep the bullies and other kids away from her. She used them now to sneak back into town. What she saw chilled her more than the damp mist. There was a pile of bodies in the street. All of the old and the children. The screaming was of the women, girls and boys as they were raped by the soldiers. Many had the flesh ripped from their bodies by the armor the men did not even bother to remove.
She slunk through the shadows of the alleys toward her family's hovel, she froze when she saw the corpse of her little brother, Bleak, lying across the threshold. She peeked through a rent in the old sacking over the back 'window' Nothing moved in the house, but there were lumps of what might once have been her family lying in pools of blood all over the floor. Red eyes winked about the room. Infernal creatures feeding upon the blood and souls of the dead and dying. She left the way she came - unseen.
When she regained the forest outside of the village, she vomited what little there was in her stomach. Staying to the trees she walked away from the village. She walked for 3 days without stopping or even noticing the tears that streaked her face mingled with the rain. On the third day she crawled into a hollow log exhausted and drifted to sleep. She dreamed of her family sitting around a warm fire in the main room where her mother hung her dyed yarn to dry. They all had dry clothes and her mother's tuber soup. She wanted to join them in her dream but they would not let her. They told her she had work to do.
When she awoke a day and half later, she began to hear the voices of her family telling her to go to the city of Graycastle to live. So she did.
